Redefining Maternal Care with A Light After Nine
After nine pregnancy losses, Rachell Dumas found purpose in creating a nonprofit to support families facing fertility struggles and pregnancy loss. Here's how she’s changing the game in maternal care.
Let’s be honest, pregnancy is supposed to be magical, right? But for me, it was a whirlwind of heartbreak, confusion, and unanswered questions. After nine pregnancy losses–yes, nine—I was completely shattered. Every loss chipped away at my hope and left me wondering if I’d ever experience the joy of holding my own baby.
And then, something shifted.
I realized that as painful as my journey was, it gave me a perspective that could help others. Instead of giving up, I decided to channel my pain into purpose.
That’s how A Light After Nine was born.
Our mission is simple: to support families navigating fertility challenges and pregnancy loss while advocating for compassionate, patient-centered maternal care. Because let’s face it, the healthcare system often falls short when it comes to truly supporting moms.
Here’s what we’re doing to shake things up:
1. Partnering with Healthcare Providers to Change the Game
We work with hospitals, clinics, and healthcare professionals to create trauma-informed environments for families going through tough times. Think fewer awkward conversations and more empathetic, understanding care. It’s about time we prioritize the emotional and physical needs of patients, don’t you think?
2. Supporting Families Directly
Through A Light After Nine, we offer families emotional support, resources, and advocacy tools. We want every mom (and dad!) to feel empowered, heard, and supported. Whether it’s connecting them with a counselor, guiding them through tough conversations with doctors, or simply being a listening ear, we’ve got their backs.
3. Partnering with Employers to Bring Support to the Workplace
Did you know that a lot of families navigating fertility treatments or recovering from pregnancy loss feel unsupported at work? We’re working with companies to change that by helping them create better maternal care policies. Think mental health and maternal care resources, flexible work schedules, and extended leave options. Because no one should have to choose between healing and their job.
Why It Matters
I could sit here and list stats about how common pregnancy loss is (because it is), but what really matters is this: No one should feel alone in their journey. Whether it’s the first miscarriage or the ninth, the emotional toll is heavy, and families deserve better care, more understanding, and fewer awkward silences when they share their struggles.
For me, my journey didn’t end with my losses. I finally had my miracle baby, and while it wasn’t easy, it reminded me why this work matters so much. Every family deserves a light in their darkest moments.
